Because birth is traumatic. The baby is warm and comfortable inside the womb. Suddenly the mother's body begins to eject him or her, and the child must make an arduous journey down the birth canal. Its a highly stressful event, in which some children actually die through suffocation or strangulation on the umbilical cord. At any rate, the baby leaves the warm womb and falls into a cold hospital room and his little eyes, which have only known darkness, are suddenly hit with an array of high wattage hospital lights. The baby is cold, tired, hungry, and stressed. Wouldn't you cry too?
