A colleague is someone you work with or go to school with. There is no friendship or personal relationship between the two of you. You simply exist in the same work or school environment. A friend is someone you share personal information with. They are closer to you and know a lot more about you. You trust them and count on them. You spend a lot more time with them.

colleague is just someone you work with, a friend is someone that you hang out w/, talk to, and generally like. You can be friends with your colleagues but you know, thats a thing.

a colleague is a person whom you only have a work related experience with. a friend is a person that is there for you all the time not just when your at work.
