REAL mp3 players, play STANDAR mp3 encoded audio files, independent of OS and independent of special software like iTunes or "Real one player" if you need itunes to load your audio files into an ipod then it is NOT an mp3 player.

I do not use Windows or Macs, Also I do not use ANY software (other than the OS) as the interface for mp3 players. I use Linux and FREE DOS. I have a "rio" mp3 player and I can transfer my files back and forth just using the OS interface. My son wants an ipod but I will not buy it unless it is a true mp3 player.

Yeah, iTunes is just an interface to sync the iPod with. You can use Media Player or any other program, iTunes just comes bundled with the iPod, so its the most common one used.

An iPod is an mp3 player. Like every other mp3 player, there is a specific interface program for it, which you use to transfer music or whatever files between your comp and player.

Itunes is the interface for the ipod, though you cannot move a music file back to your comp after it has been transferred to your ipod. The mp3 format of the music on the ipod doesn't change after you load music onto it.

So whatever mp3 file you originally have, you can play it using itunes, and the song will automatically be saved it your itunes library until you transfer it to the ipod.

You might want to check out COWON Iaudio stuff (X5 or U3 models are popular). They seem to be what you're looking for. Work with any OS, no SW needed, lots of features, good design, good price.

I'm sure your son still wants the IPOD anyway ;-)

It's an mp3 player. And it's overrated. End of story.

clarification by "Real" do you mean genuine? in that case, yes it is. the fact of the matter is you don't necessarily NEED itunes....your songs will jus be messed up in formatting if you use Windows Media Player to synchronize, for example.

If by "Real" you mean proprietary to the Real Media...then I do not know the answer to that.
