This means that there is another computer on the network with the same name/IP address as your's. To solve this problem, (in WIN XP/2000/2003) right click on MY Computer, click Properties.
In the properties page, click on the Computer Name tab.

Click the LAST button of the page wich says "To rename this computer or join a domain, click change". Click Change. In the window that comes up, enter a different name nad click OK. Click apply and then OK.

Log off and back in for changes to take effect.

If this dosent solve problem, ask the question again as "My computer says there is a duplicate IP address on the network...what does that mean?"

Every computer has a name. When they are on a network, each computer must be unique.

Go to MY COMPUTER and pick NETWORK IDENTIFICATION. Set the computers on your network to individual computer names.

A duplicate IP address can occur when a duplicate Name occurs. So it is a proper FIX to make all computers named in a unique fashion.

Good luck

It means that there is another computer on the network that has the same computer name as yours, and therefore you can't get on the network because only one computer name is allowed (no duplicate names). You can see your computer name by right-clicking on the "My Computer" icon and selecting Properties. If you had Admin rights on your computer, you can change the computer name there - but beware because if you have anything shared, the other computers will lose the path and have to remap the shares..

Sounds like you already have a computer on the network with the SAME NAME you're trying to use.

For example, The Host computer is named "Host", your Kid's computer is named "Kids". So you can NOT have another computer on the network named "Host" or "Kids".

there might be an application that you didn't log out of properly, and it's still showing you as signed in...

that can happen when you have little power hiccups, or other puter gremlins

most networks/applications won't let the same user name log in twice..

or, there might be two of you with similar names and the user ID protocol for your name is already in use, i.e., smithj (for John),
means that you, as Judy Smith, would need to be identified as smithju

administrator should be able to fix this for you..
