There are three F's to avoid constipation: Fluids, Fiber, and Fitness. For older children that usually offers an easy solution. In babies under 3 or 4 months a rectal temperature will sometimes stimulate them to have a bowel movement. Prune juice, diluted 1:1 with water may be used to treat constipation in babies over a month or two. In babies on solids, try using prunes, apricots, pears, beans, plums and decrease foods like rice cereal, bananas, applesauce, or rice. Occasionally, a change of formula may be helpful, but talk to your physician before making a change.

Are you breastfeeding or bottle feeding? If breastfeeding change your diet to a high fiber one. If not, which brand formula are you using? Good Start is best digestion. Even though smilac is heavy on tummies. They have a formula made especially for constipation. It works pretty quick.
If nothing works, there is one last way to help. You should only go this way if you have to and only once. Otherwise your baby won't b able t have b.m.on his own. It might sound weird but it works.Below is how:
Baby Enema -Lubricate tip of bulb syringe with olive oil. Insert tip of bulb syringe into your baby’s rectum ½ inch. The bulb should contain approximately 1 to 3 tablespoons of lukewarm water. Gently squeeze the water into the colon. Assure that only the water goes into the colon, not any air that might be in the bulb. Wait a few minutes for your baby to pass a stool. Repeat this process if necessary.
You should also go below website. See doctors will tell you it is okay if your baby don't go up to a week. Well yes that might be through, however you know your baby's pattern better than your doctor. Trust your instinct and good luck.

Ok, I may be able to help here. When one of my babies was new-3-4 months old she suffered with awful constipation. It was so bad that she pushed and pushed to only bleed and her inner parts coming out with the pushing. She was in excruciating pain and nothing worked.
One midwife and doctor said they can go a week without going (but they didn't have to go that week listening to the pain my baby was in) I felt so helpless then my health visitor said that a little vaseline on the finger and gently massage around the anus stimulates the muscles. It was instant relief. My baby went to the loo and I ended up changing her milk. None of my kids could drink SMA gold and I changed to cow&gate so consider if the milk is causing the problem. Also, be sure your baby gets a little boiled water in their diet, a few ounces a day even, a lot of mothers only give milk which again can cause constipation.
Ask your health visitor for advice they are there to get it!

Is your baby breastfeeding or formula feeding? Breastfed babies generally don't suffer from constipation because they get all the fluid they need from breastmilk. If formula fed, just try and feed more frequently. Four months is a little young to be giving any kind of juice. Plus you don't want your baby to ever be full from juice and not take milk instead at this young age. They need all the nutrients from the breastmilk or formula at this age for brain development.

It is normal for a baby to have a bowel movemnet every four days. I would try stimulating her anus with a gloved lubricated finger. If stimulation and apple juice are not getting the job done. I wouold suggest a baby suppository, However cut them in half and only insert 1/2 into your baby. Consult your doctor... if you are concerned your doctor is not helping get a second opinion.

My baby had the same problem and I gave him karo Syrup with some water in a bottle. And sort of like an enema, I used the tip of a thermometer to get him going (his doctor told me to do it while laying him on his back). I was desperate for anything because he hadn't gone in 4 days and became jaundice! Try that until it works.
Good luck and I hope he feels better.

My pediatrician told me you can mix a little metamucil in with their food. The prune stuff has worked so far for my baby though, so I havent had to do that. Also, this is kind of gross, but it helps. If you have a rectal thermometer, you can put it in their butt and wiggle it around a little bit, that usually helps get things moving. Good luck!

if your child has not had a bowel movement in 3-4 days take him to the emergency room, no hesitation it could be a serious health problem. also to soften the bowel movement give him lots of fruits and vegetables and fruit juices and do not forget the water. also take him outside to excercise and give him plenty of fresh air it will help.

Mix 2 ounces of water with 2 tablespoons DARK Karo (corn) syrup and give it to him in a bottle. Should work in a few hours. It always did for my kids.

They have baby enemas at the store. Go get one for him. Juice should work. If nothing else, or if you are really worried about it the ER will know what to do, and they will check to see if there is a problem.
