I'm in my fifties and still don't have one. Have no intention of ever getting one either. Personally, I can't believe there is enough to talk about that people would even want one. My home phone frequently goes as long as an entire two weeks without ever ringing once! (I also still have a rotary phone in the bedroom.)So, as you can see, I wouldn't have any real need for one.
I recall back in the eighties, when there was talk about people being able to have phones that they could carry with them in the future, laughing and telling someone that such a device would never catch on. Guess I was wrong.

Its a habit, you can break it by starting to leaving it at home and just us it when you go on a trip, we did it, I'm this close to have the service turn off and buy a phone with minutes when I take a trip

The answer is simple, we have simply adapted and gotten used to cell phones. We feel we need them in case of an emergency, or just to talk to friends.

Because everyone else is using it, so they can't contact you and vice versa. If no one else is using it, we'll find another way to communicate and you won't feel handicapped.

We redefined what it means to be "accessible". And "response time" expectations have skyrocketed.
