After adding some ip's in the hosts file (to block advertising pop-ups), when I try to save it, it gets saved as a text file and the "hosts" file remains as it is. I also tried to edit the "hosts" file in command prompt but it showed a message "you can't edit read-only files". I also tried to rename the text file "hosts.txt" as "hosts" but failed as the "hosts" file was already present. So, what do I need to do to edit & save the "hosts" file ?

Right click on the hosts file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc) and clear the read-only check box attribute and click OK to apply.

Right Click and OPEN with NOTEPAD. When you are done editing you should be able to save it fine, without notepad worring about an extention.

Some apps like winscotty (or other anti-spyware) will check if the hosts file is read only every now and again, so disable them while you are editing and eanable them when your'e done.

precise click it, bypass to homes, and deselect study-in undemanding words. yet be careful, in case you do not comprehend what you're doing once you edit this report, your operating device ought to no longer start up.
