Okay... so Christopher Columbus didn't discover America. How do you discover a place that is already inhabited and that the vikings also stumbled upon YEARS before Columbus did. Also, we here in the States think that he landed in what is the USA when it was really in the Carribean. He also died of syphalus. Sorry, as much as I appreciate Columbus, it's kind of weird to recognize a guy who was going to India and bumped into Haiti.
Also, the USA originally wanted to honor columbus by naming our country after him, but Columbia got to it first and that is why Washington DC is named district of Columbia.

I am not offended that Christopher Columbus has his own holiday. As low of character he was by today's standards, the holiday recognizes and commemorates the voyage to "The new world" which changed the world view.
However, I am shocked that schoolchildren in Illinois get a vacation for something called "Roman Polanski Day" ... ???

You need to put things into historic context, yes, Christopher Columbus may not be a civil right leader, but the world isn't only made up of human right, why should only people who fought for civil right get their only holiday? Many scientist in the history of man kind have their particular shortcomings that were inevitable under their particular historic period, you can't judge one man from too narrow a perspective.

Actually America may have been discovered by Leif Ericson long before Columbus so as a Norwegian descendant I celebrate Leif Ericson Day.

YES! I am offended. That moron was looking for India not America. But then again, I think India is better off since Columbus turned people into slaves once he got here.

If you actually read the diaries of Christopher Columbus he was quite savage, killing natives in ways to meet his perverted needs. It is interesting his real history has not been reviewed regularly.

Oh yeah, dude!!!! I am so totally outraged.
I mean, starving Africans. Sectarian persecutions in the Sudan. 30 million people once murdered by Joseph Stalin. Women battered around the world. Young people dropping out of school and getting hooked on drugs. The millions murdered under Hitler's domination. Islamic extremism and all of the deaths it leads to.
Well, that's some bad stuff, but I'll tell you what really gets me up in arms.
THE FACT THAT CHRISTOPHER COLOMBUS GETS HIS OWN F**KIN' HOLIDAY!!!!!!
JESUS CHRIST!!!! HOLY S**T!!!! WHAT A TRAVESTY!!!
HELP! HELP! I'M BEING REPRESSED!!! I'M BEING REPRESSED!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!

In a way .. but face it .. the reality of America is that Europeans came over here and killed, enslaved, and took everything from the indigenous people. Perhaps it is good that we celebrate him as it is a good way for debate to crop up that reminds us of the harsh truth. Perhaps if we were to forget him we would also forget our true history.

Yes, I am offended. Columbus was a bumbling idiot who didn't have a clue where he was. If we are going to celebrate ineptness, why not have a George W. Bush day? I am native american mix, Columbus just proved my ancestors had really bad immigration laws. How can you discover a "new world" if people are already there? Duh!
