In short, average annual salary is about $31,700.
Average hourly wage is $16.62 (US dollars) for all private sector employees (people who do not work for the government). The workweek is about 33.8 hours, with 4.6 hours of overtime. So, the average weekly salary is about $561. Thus, the average annual salary is $29,252.14. You can find the Bureau of Labor Statistics data at http://stats.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm
For both private and government employees, the average salary was $18.09 per hour, the average for only government workers was $22.77 per hour as of July 2004; this gives an average annual salary of about $31,700. A pdf with data breakdowns for profession and location is at http://www.bls.gov/ncs/ocs/sp/ncbl0727.pdf
This is smaller than the average income, because income includes profits from investments (bank accounts, stocks, etc.), and I do not believe it accounts for bonuses, though I am not certain.
The average household income in 2004 was $44,389, according to the census at http://www.census.gov/prod/2005pubs/p60-229.pdf (page 10 according to Adobe, or page 3 as printed on the page itself). There are about 113 million households in the United States. This number is often used in place of personal income because it better reflects living standard and quality of life. This amount includes profits from investments and other non-salary income.
In case you are curious, it appears that the job with highest hourly salary is pilot, at around $113 per hour. However, being a pilot is more of a lifestyle than a profession, and pilots spend most of their time between flights recovering from jet lag (the effect on the sleep and eating cycle of traveling east and west; the pilot moves through several time zones and throws their bodily cycle off by several hours). So, pilots technically ‘work’ relatively few hours, but their job occupies most of their life.
