Great song, one of Billie Hollidays best. I believe she wrote it. As earlier mentioned its about lynchings in the south.

yes, a great song dealing with those very sad "necktie parties". everyone should have listened to these at least one time because it's a part of American history, even if it's not a good one and it has to be remembered in order not to be redone

I prefer the more modern Marcus Miller version which has no lyrics at all.
