I know I can get the IP through traces, but I want to find geographically where the originating computer resides.

well if the person and you were smart you cant.i use an ip scrambler system that changes the ip every time so can stop spam and people like you who might have no need to know such things.if the person wanted you to know you would know!ever thought of that?

i am goin to assume that u dont have technical knowhow of CIA or NSA.... finding geographical location is possible if u have an idea about the ISPs which is providing the set of IP addresses... this works for both static and dynamic IPs... but that is nullified by the fact that IP spoofing is not a very difficult technique. Moreover u cant in individual capacity pin point an address.
Tracking email is possible to an extent by reading the header of the mail.. but in many cases even that wont lead u anywhere

would be your best bet. Keep in mind that this does not mean that where it points to is necessarily where it came from. IP addresses can easily be spoofed, (faked) or the sender may have a dynamically allocated IP, in which case the IP may already been assigned to someone else or not be in use at all. In that case, the best you can do is discover the ISP by checking whom the IP is registered to.
