Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye.
A group called the Chateaus nearing the end of group's existance were putting out four songs. The label was so impressed with the songs that they wanted to put then all out as A sides, so they had to quickly come up with a B side for the first release. The throwaway B side song was Na Na Hey Hey. the label heard the throwaway song and decided it was going to be the A side release, they liked it so much! The musicians were outraged and refused to put their name on it, but claimed songwriting credit. It was released and went to number one. The put it out under the name Steam, just to have a name.
Since the record went to number one, there were demands for Steam to perform, but actually there was no real 'Steam' A group was thrown together to sop up the tv appearances and a tour, but no other song from Steam made it to number one.
The song, however was remade by Bananarama in the 80s and has the distinction of being played at least three million times on radio and is the unofficial theme of the Chicag White Sox.
For other sports songs look at: ESPN Presents: Jock Rock or Jock Jams and Stadium Anthems. Several volumes are available.
Let's get ready to RUMBUUUUUUUUUUUUUL!
