It depends upon which part of the country you are located. If you're in Southern California, New York City, Boston, Washington, DC, or any of the other booming areas, you won't be able to find a house for that amount. If you're willing to settle in the midwest, your chances of being able to buy a house for that amount are much greater.
Here in Indiana, you can find communities all around the state where you can find a starter home for that amount. Other states have even cheaper housing. Kansas, for example, has many communities that offer incentives to help people buy houses. These are communities that have a decreasing population, so they are offering free or low cost housing to try to encourage people to move there. Of course, you'd have to live in Kansas.

The cheapest market in the country is in college station tx. But would you be willing to live there? It is rated the most undervalued market in the country. Others include, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, El Paso. All located in texas. Good luck with your search....I am sure you will not find a 'new' home for 50k but you might get close in college station.
