Masters Degree vs. Master Certificate, which is better for a 35 yr.old career changer. I want to get into Human Resources (HR) after 20 yrs in customer service. I have my BA degree in communications and want to get additional education but not sure which way is best. I am married and we bought a house less than 2 yrs ago so money does play a part in which way my education will go.

Although a Masters' degree is more "academically" prominent, if you are looking for a feasible way to get into the Human Resource industry, a Masters' Certificate will hold more weight. The Degree is focused on theory, while a Certificate focuses on the practical. A Degree shows that you are thoughtful and intelligent, a Certificate shows that you are able to do the job effectively!

Master's Degree would definitely be better but Certificate may be ok seeing as how it is going along with a BA. You might be able to use your general education classes to go toward a second BA degree in something different to complement Communication. Like maybe Computer Science or Psychology.

Any degree backed up by an accredited college or university would be best, as employers do not wish to feel stupid by not knowing the difference themselves. If they see a degree it would imply more education than a certificate, even if that were not the case. Go for the more recognized degree. I changed careers in my thirties by going back to college, single-mom and all, and have paid for it all by applying for scholarships and supplemented by a few small loans, and my increased income has paid it all off years ago. Best of luck to you!

A degree is by far the better choice. A certificate does not have the same resonance of importance as a degree does. Furthermore, the degree has more education behind it.
