Macs running OSX have less of a need, but virus protection won't necessarily prevent your dad from peeking around your laptop either in person or remotely. You could try changing the root password. Taht may slow him down.
The viruses that have been released for Macs must limit their 'attack' to the active users account (in OSX, anyway). In regards to the other folks comments about no virusses for macs, that's just plain wrong. There certainly are fewer of them and they are less destructive, but they are out there. You absolutely CAN write a virus for any operating system... period.
Bottom line, if I were you, I'd get virus protection. When someone finally does release a devatating Mac virus (it will happen in the next year), that little bit of protection may save you a lot of heartache.

Do you care about your data? The answer to that question is the same as the answer to if you need virus protection.
While the OS X is not as widely used as windows (which makes it less of a target), software is software (not perfect) and vulnerabilities can leave door open on your system for virus and in OS X's case trojans/rootkits are more likely.
Protect your data, get AV protection because your identity and data are too important to save a few bucks.

Macs are generally out of the box secure. The OS X it uses was derived in part from the BSD implementation of Unix, meaning that it has all the security features which makes Unix so inherently secure. You can modify these security settings if you want, but most of the time there is no need.
Most malicious software is targetted at Windows systems anyway. Even though I don't use it, I can't help but admire what Apple has done.
What YOU need to do is ensure that you don't allow anyone to break in to your system easily. Make a password that includes at a minimum 8 characters (though I'd recommend at least 12) and is completely random.

Yes, you should have some form of protection, although it doesn't need to be as strong as the protection on a windows computer.
