Susan Polgar's "A World Champion's Guide to Chess" is an excellent beginner's book.
She also has a follow up book to that one, called "Chess Tactics for Champions".
She is a great teacher, her books are well written and to the point.
I'm sure "Chess for Dummies" or "The Idiot's Guide to Chess" are probably good too...
A good site from which to buy chess books is;
www.wholesalechess.com.
They have over 600 books on their site, written for players at all levels of ability.
Barnes and Noble, Books a Million, or Borders ususally have a good stock of beginner chess books. Browse around and see what looks good to you...
There are also a number of web sites that will teach you how to play the game...
If you google "how to play chess", I'm sure you'll get a ton of sites to check out.
Good luck to you...chess is a great, great game!!! The best game ever invented!

I reccomend "Chess for Dummies." It gives a great introduction of the rules. Then it gives you the basic tactics ("tricks"), some basics of opening strategy, and endgame strategy. It does a great job of giving you a taste of all the areas of knowlege that you will eventually need to explore.
After that, I like Pandolfini. His "Traps and Zaps" is brilliant. The premise is simple - your opponent just made a mistake, find it an exploit it. And that is how you win.
But start with "Chess for Dummies."

relies upon whether you're searching for tactical workouts (ie, positions from actual video games), composed problems or endgame learn. i could advise Chessboard Magic by making use of Irving Chernev or 1234 present day Endgame learn by making use of Sutherland and Lommer for the final classification. there are a number of preparation books featuring tactical workouts and doubtless much extra pertaining to to the worldwide of chess composition (acquaintances in 2, 3, 4 or extra strikes).
