We had sod put in almost 2 weeks ago for free. (Landscaper had to much and was going to toss it). The men who installed it spoke little english so I don't know how long untill we can use the lawn.

Actually, sod should not be walked on at all. The two worst things for a yard are human feet and bicycle tires because of pressure per square inch. If you're going back and forth to certain places, make paths with mulch or stones or anything else convenient. If they're playing football out there, then do the best you can with water and fertilizer.

If you have been watering it and taking care of it you should be able to walk on it now. Your best bet is to carefully walk out and check it in a few places by pulling gently on the grass. If it is rooting into the ground good you my want to mow it. But checking is the most important part some soils take longer for the root systems to catch.
