Go to a mattress place with the attitude that you are willing to leave without actually purchasing one. Test out the mattresses you want. When you find one you like, keep browsing and wait for a salesman/woman to approach. When you are inevitably asked how much you are willing to spend, give a figure about half the price of the one you really want. At some point, make sure that the salesperson really knows which one you want, but you really want to keep the prices down. You are just looking, after all...
Then - and this part is VERY important - wait until there is no other potential buyer within earshot and then make your move to finally leave. At this point, the salesperson, seeing that you really are out the door, will likely approach and give you the best deal he reasonably can. Remember that he/she can't do this as freely if there are people who aren't as sophisticated nearby. And, essential to this strategy is that you be prepared to actually leave if you don't get that fabulous deal!
I have also heard stories of people dressing provocatively and cajoling a good deal out of a salesperson with suggestive banter and positioning, but I highly recommend against that approach.

Like the commercials say, go into the mattress stores and test them out. Take off your shoes and get up on the mattress and lay on it like you would sleep on it. Do you like a soft bed or a hard bed? Do you want a "pillow top;" that's an extra layer of soft cushion on top of the mattress. They have some now that you don't have to flip every six months. Do you want a twin, full, queen, king, or California king? You'll need the box spring to go with it. The sides of the mattresses are getting thicker, so sometimes standard sheets and mattress pads don't fit anymore. Where I live, there's all kinds of places like Mattress Warehouse that are in a lot of the strip malls. The departments stores have them, too. Most places like that will deliver the mattress and set it up for you. You can usually get it in a few days. You'll probably need a bed frame, too. There's usually a delivery charge, $30, I don't know. Go out and get a Sunday newspaper and look at the adds. Good luck.

Most of your better mattress stores will offer free delivery, don't sell yourself short and buy a cheap mattress, spend some money and get a good mattress and box spring, they are made to complement each other and you will find you get a better nights sleep. A mattress should do two things for you, make it comfortable so you can fall asleep and also provide support so you can wake up refreshed, so try out various types of mattresses when you go to the store. I certainly hope you are not one of those people who say "I really like them firm" if you like a mattress so firm then sleep on the floor. It has to support your body and your body is not flat like a board it has curves and different areas of weight so get a mattress designed to support those areas and also look for a good warranty and get it in writing from the store. When you make your decision you can barter the price and also insist on free delivery and setup.
Good luck

Go to a furniture place that sells them, and lie on each and every single one for about 2 or 3 minutes until you find one that you think will be comfortable enough for you to spend the next ten years sleeping on every night. Then ask them to deliver, most places will if you ask.
