The belief that babies need burping after feedings, or help "bringing up the wind," originated with the spread of bottle-feeding. The faster flow of milk from bottle nipples forces babies to gulp air in between closely-spaced swallows.

Breastfeeding infants have fewer problems with air in their tummies. They can control the flow of milk at the breast and so they suck with a slower rhythm that allows them to better coordinate breathing and swallowing.

Not being an expert but having burped my babies quite a few times I think babies need to be urged to burp. They get air in their stomachs when they suck on a bottle or the breast.
Like when adults drink a coke too fast. Babies just hold this air in and can get unhappy about it.
Nobody likes an unhappy baby.
Sometimes they burp on their own but I always put them over my shoulder and patted them on the back till I hear something.
Hopefully it wont be spit up all down my back. And that has happened too.
Your personal sense of hygiene changes with babies because they get burp, pee, and poop on you at various times.
Hope this helps.

Properly burp them in an upright position. They swallow air while feeding and it helps relieve the bloated feeling so they can sleep and it also makes room for them to feed more after burping. If you lay them down without burping they may loose their lunch. Babies get more air from bottles than nursing.

Because babies cannot make themselves burp and they swallow a lot of air when feeding. It causes them pain, hence the manual burping by the parent.

Adults know how to help the trapped air to escape and burp on their own young babies do not. As they grow they learn to do this on their own and you will not have to do it any longer. By holding the baby in s certain position and patting the back you are helping that air to escape. If it does not, the baby will be in pain and get fussy and possibly end up throwing up what they ate. Continue to burp your baby until he or she is old enough to do this on his or her own. Thanks.

Babies will develope colic if you don't burp them. Air gets trapped and causes severe discomfort. Burp your wife?

Infants are capable of swallowing AND breathing at the same time so they tend to fill up on air. If you don't burp them, they will either become physically ill or fall alseep quickly. Repeated feedings will be needed if you do not HELP your child exspell the gas and fill his/her belly with food.

it's because gas gets trapped and babies don't know how to use their stomach muscles to force that air up like adults do.

Yes, start burping your wife. I'm sure you thought that was hysterical as you wrote it.

Do us a favour... don't have kids, K?

Babies need to burp because they get irritated by the gas build up in their tummies which can cause discomfort and pain. Babies swallow huge amounts of gas while drinking because they suckle. That air builds up in their tummies and will irritate them until it is expelled through farts or bumps. Same goes for your wife. In her case she maybe taking in both oxygen gases (from eating or drinking too fast) and carbon monoxide gases from (pop/soda drinks).
