1). Electricity (This by far has to be number one simply because most people take this invention for granted. None of us truly realized how we'd live today if electricity was all of a sudden cut off from our reach).

2). Transportation (From boats to railroads to cars to airplanes, technology has made it possible for everyone to reach their destinations faster. I mean, back in the 1800's, people couldn't walk from Seattle to Portland and through technology, we have been able to accomplish far greater than that).

3). Computers (Computers are simply "life" to everyone today. Because businesses, schools, and government offices use computers to keep track of data and important information, computers has made it possible to either keep people safe or do more harm than good).

4). Internet (The Internet has made it possible for everyone connect to the world. It allows people to create, store, or distribute data for anyone to see. Convenient yet a bit costly depending on people use this source).

5). Electronic Media (Need I say more? We all get headline news from the TV, the Internet, and the radio).

Read this book: Five Equations that Changed the World by Michael Guillen. It explains, in terms that even I can understand, how these equations changed the world as we know it (why planes fly, E=mc squared, electricity, etc). I'm not a numbers geek, but this book gave me a better understanding of the world we live in. It's written very well.

I would go and get the book right now, but my son is sleeping in the bedroom and this book is in my closet.
