iPods are much greater than an "MP3 player". With the iPod, you use iTunes to manage your music library on your PC or Mac. Songs downloaded from iTunes are not in MP3 format, but AAC format, which is a loss-less format. With MP3 compression, music can sound distorted or garbled, but with AAC, music is always crystal clear. That doesn't mean that the iPod won't play MP3s. You can import your MP3s into iTunes and they will play on your iPod. The iPod also plays videos. The videos are encoded in the h.264 format, which is the new Apple Quicktime format. h.264 is beautiful, entirely pristine. iPods can also store your photos, contacts and notes. The iPod comes with several small games and many other features, such as EQ, speed variance for audio books, a stopwatch, a screen lock and a calendar. There are even extras that you can download from Apple's website, such as dictionaries, foreign language aids and libraries of mixed drink recipes. The iPod has a massive amount of storage, sporting up to 60 GB, as well as a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, capable of up to 20 hours of playback time. You can't beat an iPod. I love mine. (You can also use the iPod as an external hard drive.) There's even more, but I'm not going to type it all out, just check out the website.

The format used by an ipod is very specific to the brand --MP4. Apple was very creative in their invention of the ipod. First, you have to download the exclusive itunes program if you want your music on your ipod. Itunes allows you to organize your library my artist, song, album, genre etc.. When you download music into MP3 format and bring it over to itunes, it automatically converts the song to MP4. Good luck trying to convert the Mp4 back to Mp3.Always back up the MP3 format if you want to play it in a different media player in the future. Most Mp3 players do not allow you to visually browse through your library created and create playlists. If they do, the idea was created by Apple and the cost of these would be close to apple's format. Ipods were originally created to work in conjunction with Apple's MAC computers. If you compare a MAC to a window's based pc (HP, Dell) You will notice that the difference in price is hefty. MAC's are always more expensive. Ipods are very sophisticated and Apple reaps the benefit of their invention by charging the steeper prices. MP3's and Ipods are not the same...they are not two peas in a pod. An iPod IS an MP3 player. Its made by Apple and like thier computers work very well with Apple software. MP3 players made by others (Creative, Sony, etc) will work just as well but will take other file types (WMA,MP3 ,etc)
I personally dont care for the iPod. I have a 30GB Creative Zen. It will store files of all types, act as an external hard drive or play music. And I dont need to use iTunes to get my music.. Any old thing will work.

An iPod is an MP3 player. Some iPods also play video, though, and that's where they differ.

difference is ipods are annyong and rubbish-the headphones get all tangled, mp3 players i think are better because they are smaler, i know ipods are slim and all that but with mp3 players you can hang them round you neck therefore are less likely to get stolen.
