Italy uses the Euro currency which is also used in Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.
There are still many countries in Europe that do not use the Euro, such as Sweden and Britain.

Completely disregard all answers that tell you its the lira. It Used to be up until 2000 when the Euro was brought into play as the Single Currency of the EU. Somebody even said that the whole of the EU uses the euro now. No. Great Britain doesnt for a start, and neither do about half of the 25 member states. I think the number is 12 countries using the euro. It can be remembered wit the pneumonic 'Baffling Pigs'
Belgium
Austria
France
Finland
Luxumburg
Italy
Netherlands
Germany
Portugal
Iceland
Greece
Spain

Italy now uses the Euro as the base of their currency. Previously, Italy used the Lira.

It used to be the Lira but now Italy uses the euro. Not all European countries have the euro, as usual we Brits are lagging behind, stubborn as mules.

That is hard to say because a lot of people think they "NEED" things that they really don't need. The bare minimum it would take is to get a ticket there and stay at a hostel until you find where you'd like to live.
