just obtained a 1984 chevy short box and the vin says 305 but the guy I got it from says it is not the original motor. Any help would be great.

Check the numbers, unfortunately that is the only way to tell. And whoever answered that you can bore a 305 to a 350 !! It is utterly impossible, there isn't enough block to be able to bore over. The absolute most you can safely bore over a SBC block is .0060 over and that is really pushing it. Even with .0060 over on a 305 it will give you only a 315 cu. inch....still a long way from a 350. Your problem here is the stroke distance on the 305 vs. the 350, it can't make up for it. So check the numbers on the block....that will tell you the story every time.

If they are 1984 motors, valve covers will fit both motors. In the late '80s, GM produced the throttle body small block. They will not interchange. If you want to know the CID, there is pad on right front of the motor w/ a stamped code. Any GM dealer can tell you the CID w/ the code.

engine stamp located in right front of engine block on a pad just below the head.also by harmonic balancer if original.small[21/2 to3``wide by6``diameter ,305,,,8``diameter 350,,,8`` with notch in it about 3`` long 400,smaller and thinner can be anything from a 265 to a 327. happy hunting.
