Years ago i was riding in the car with my aunt, who seemed to have the perfect family. I had 5 cousins, they lived in a beautiful house, everything seemed to run like clockwork, nice clothes, sports, happy mealtimes. My parents were divorced and my mother was mentally ill. I asked my aunt why my family was so messed up, and hers was so perfect. She replied that every family has its problems.
Years later I learned of their problems. It was true.
Every family has their problems.
But, family is the best thing we have, isn't it? We just need to rise to the challenge and love and help each other as best we can.

I think every generation of a family tries not to repeat the so-called "mistakes" (possibly called "life-lessons" by some) made by their parents. In doing this, they make changes in roles, responsibilites etc. particularly when it comes to child-rearing. Inevitably, this fails because no family is perfect, and in fact being human is about living and learning and quite a bit about dealing with difficulties such as loss, change, disappointment and failure. A successful but not perfect family handles such issues together and works to use love and understanding as tools to that end. I think that the TV personification of the "perfect family" actually illustrates the fictionalized ideal of what the perfect family should be. The perfect family however, doesn't exist because all families are different and you can't build a rubric that measures every families success at being "perfect".

Well, to say that it is "dysfunctional" is literally to say that at least at times, it fails to function as it should/ought to/wants to.
This is true of every family - the bigger question is - do we recognize the dysfunction and try to change it? If a family can communicate, be respectful, and learn to resolve conflict, it can become far more functional and far more happy.

Most definitely. Only television families are perfect because they're scripted.
