There are so many partnerships between foreign auto companies and American auto companies now that it's all the same. The situation isn't like it was in the 70's when Japanese cars took over. American cars are just fine, depending on your need. So you need to be more specific with your question. If you need a minivan, Dodge has led the pack since they first came out. For a truck, try Chevy or Toyota. For compact economy cars, Toyota, Honda, and Chevy make some efficient models. For sedans, you'll be fine with Toyota, Ford, Chevy, Honda, and pretty much anyone else.
My family owns/have owned a Ford, a Chevy, a Dodge, a Saturn, a Hyundai, a Honda, and a Toyota. The Honda and the Saturn were pieces of crap, the Toyota ran okay but had to be in the shop a lot, the Hyundai, Chevy, and Dodge are really good cars, and the Ford has been running strong for over 14 years. So your mileage truly may vary.

my first car was a honda , it looked crap, but ran like a dream. I got out of college and thought I need a "grown up"car. heck I'll buy american. I bought a ford escort. Then Plymouth breeze. Both great looking like a "dream," ran like crap.
In february I bought another Honda.

Previously I would have told you Saturn, but GM managed to screw that up. As they always do.
Right at the moment, I don't have any I could recommend.
Look, if you want a real answer, check out Consumer reports. All the dots filled in with big black circles are bad. The ones with big red circles are good.
Look through the listings and decide for yourself.

JUST DONT BUY A FORD!!!!! Chevys are awsome and last forever. IM guessing you are going for the smaller cars by looking at your last 2 choices. look at Chevy Cobalts.

I had a Chevy S-10 pickup that was outstanding. Never had any problems. Drove it cross country a couple of times. Held its value quite well. Sold it because I moved overseas.
