I think our society has changed quite dramatically, and that there is a greater sense of resentment from men to women. In the olden days, men were more take charge, the rule was laid by them, and behind this man, was a good woman, who played a much more submissive role in his life, as well as in life period. Now, women want the same opportunities as men, and I would say rightfully so, and having the same opportunities put women at competition with men, and increases resentment toward women. Women are still not treated as men are, and I think this adds to frustration, which men can see, and adds to the resentment.
Now, I don't believe that chivalry is dead ... it's very much alive. Being a gentleman is not just about treating a woman with respect and honor, but treating everyone that way. Opening doors, using good mannerism, respectful speech, offering a smile or a good word, is something that a gentlemen does for everyone, not just for women. So when a woman says something to me when I hold a door open for her other than thank you or something appreciative, I say little or nothing. It hasn't happened often, but from time to time I seem to infringe on a persons ability to be independent and open their own door and that can be disheartening, or discouraging. But I believe, that deep down inside, they know what I have done is simply a nice gesture, and if they don't ... I do!

They do. But they are fast becoming a thing of the past. Society needs to continue to move forward without abandoning all that was good about the past. No, men shouldn't leap to throw their coats over dirty puddles for women- but the occasional door or chair is just a nice gesture. In return women should smile and thank them, not get hung up in the ethics, assume the guy is hitting on them, or make some cynical retort. Its just the class that is disappearing from the modern day.

They still do exist. Rarely, but they do. I met my husband at church, he was raised that way. I think when women started wanting "equal rights," much of chivalry died at that time. So the question could be, "am I willing to also act like a woman from the olden days." My husband always opens the car door for me, I however, reach over and open his door from the inside. They are out there, but many people think more of themselves than others. Keep looking.

Presently,
One must demand respect and courtesy to get any, it seems these days.
It is sad. My husband, who once was thoughtful and held the door for me and opened the door for me when I followed behind with packages, rarely does it any more. I have grown weary and am in pain alot and am not as fast on my feet as I used to be and he equates this with slowing him down.
He gets annoyed and sometimes yells and other times insults me.
I have seen an advisor, he has been to a therapist...things improved a bit.
He knows better but prefers to be a bore on many occasions.
Blame the movies, the t.v. shows, the video games...I think it's selfishness. or self-centeredness.
Blaming resolves nothing.
A man is a person and a human being and he shows what is important to him and who he really is by his actions.
You can remind him, point something out to him gently and thoughtfully, but if he wants to take it as nagging, he will.
Your question has prompted me to become assertive one more time and see where it goes.
Thanks!
Lil

Because of women's liberation. Last time I held a door open for a woman she said what you think I'm crippled. A lot of times when I try to be a gentlemen things like this happen. Try to help,a woman think you pervert. I still try though. We were brought up to be that way. I don't mean all women. Just a few.

Because women now have equal rights - no "women first" anymore!
EDIT:
I meant "ladies first", sorry - English is not my native language. There are no ladies anymore, because all women are addressed as ladies today; the same goes for gentlemen.
"[T]he *inequality* of rights is essential to the existence of any rights at all. - A right is a privilege."

Manners of men. Lost when our society intervenes. Lost when television shows us perfect families, where, when you really watch and observe, the men are made to look like fools. The women became overbearing men haters who treat men without respect. Lost when we as a society, do not show, teach or encourage respect..We don't have to like the people or the values, but there is a lack of respect for people and values.Lost when boys don't turn into men, and are allowed to be immature, unthinking, unfeeling 40 year old crybabies who use every excuse in the world for their infantile behavior, from the full moon whose gravitational pull on their overcooked noggins cause them to behave like spoiled brats, to the fact that their mothers didn't breast feed them. In the "olden days"boys were drafted at age 18 and spent 6 weeks in boot camp, learning to be men. Boot camp is not such a bad thing for the behavior and self assertive training men need. Mothers tend to do everything for their sons, and boot camp teaches boys to be men,to take a shower w/o being told, to shave, to be clean, to make your bed, to put your clothes away, to take care of yourself, and help out someone else.Men need to grow up, quit blaming their parents for every injustice ever caused. Quit using excuse that my mother beat me, so therefore i can beat someone else. Quit the excuses, focus on what is the right thing to do, and GROW UP. Sorry, I somehow managed to marry a spoiled brat crybaby who at age 40 thinks he is the center of the world, and its everyones fault that he is a drunken alcoholic

Such as, you have to give examples, elaborate and expand. Now a days manners are lost. You have to wonder do women deserve such manners, some are even worse than us males.
I guess it comes down to the individual and how they would like to be treated and how they treat other people.
