I suppose that names originated when early man found a need to differentiate one from another. A tribal context would have been next (the 'hill-tribe" the "valley tribe," etc.). Once everyone had a first name, surnames took a while longer. The Romans had first, middle and last names, which largely disappeared until around A.D. 1000 or so. Noble had dynastic names: "John of so and so." The commoners adopted patronymics (father's names "John's Son= Johnson." Occupational names: "Cooper=builder of barrels." Or geographical/place names: Bywater, da Vinci. Sometimes they were taken from colors: Brown, or any number of sources. Check the net, I imagine there's more info than you would ever need .
