I'm referring to the large slicing tomatoes, roma tomatoes and cherry tomatoes. Thanks!

Buy those variety plants in a garden center and make sure you plant it when the sun is least strong.(Use multi-purpose soil with compost mixed in). Water it well and make sure it's in part sun-part shade for most of the day. Keep it watered regularly and by late summer (August/September you should have a nice selection of ripe tomato's.

To combat bugs without using pesticides, fill a plant spray bottle with warm water and mild soap (like dish soap), spray those buggers when you see them to make sure they don't ruin your tomato's.
