ITS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED NOT TO CHANGE IT AS UNDESIRED CHANGES MAY CORRUPT YOUR ENTIRE OPERATING SYSTEM.

********

type c:\boot.ini in start>> run
from there you can modify it.
on my computer its
--------------------
[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Longhorn" /FASTDETECT
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
-----------------
Timeout shows the number of seconds , my default its 30

This is a lengthy process. Suggest you backup all your data first coz' if you screw up with this one you are gonna end up with a system that coughs & chokes & dies when you boot it later :) :(

First log in to the OS where you have your files. From there go to Start > Run & type "CMD" (without "quotes") & press ENTER key.

In the dos prompt that opens type the following

X:\.........\.........>echo %systemdrive% & press ENTER
(don't bother about whats before "echo" for now)

write down what is printed on the screen. It should look something like this.

X:\.........\.........>echo %systemdrive%
X:
X:\.........\.........>

This means that your current OS is installed on the drive partion named "C:"

write down someplace & mark a * against it so you remember its the one you want to retain.

Next right click "MyComputer" & click properties. In the advanced tab click on "Settings" button in "Startup & Recovery" head.

Click on the edit button in the page that comes up.

Your computer will open a notepad window & some stuff will be showing inside it. Something like this.

[boot loader]
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

First saveas the file & save it on a floppy or an external drive or even a different partition (not recommended). Just a safe place you can access in case you screw up somewhere & you finally decide its better to let a professional do it :) Believe me it can happen with this method. Now close the notepad file. Dont edit it at all!!

Removing an Operating System
At the command prompt, type:

bootcfg /delete /ID#

Where # specifies the boot entry ID that you want to be deleted from the operating systems section of the BOOT.INI file (e.g. 2 for the second Operating system that is listed.)

Now you can reboot your system & it should load only your first OS automatically. Remember rebooting is "Shut Down > Power OFF > Wait 5 seconds > Power ON" Now you should be knowing which drive you have installed the other OS. Maybe D:\ or E:\ just go to that drive on your windows explorer & delete the folder \windows. You already know which drive your wanted OS is installed on so don't delete it from there.

After that another reboot please :) Now run diskcleanup (Start>Run> type "cleanmgr" & press enter) it will ask you for the drive to scan. Select one drive at a time & select the files you want removed. Be specific about the "Obsolete Sysyem Restore Files". They belong to the OS you deleted.

Good Luck. You are definitely going to need lots of it :)

control panel/system/advanced/startup and recovery/setting and set '0' to time to display operating system, provided you are using 1st operating system. Click edit, you will get a notepad dialogue erase the operating system you don't want

Take the XP bootable disc... Boot the computer using it and when the prompter appears just type fdisk /mbr. It should work!
