carbon monoxide cannt be used by most plants and convert into oxygen for sure;
However, carbon monoxide, like sulfur dioxide, is not super stable, it will be oxidized by oxygen eventually, catalyzed by dirts in the air, and become carbon dioxide, then the plants can take care of it.
However, combustion of fussel fuels, like petroleum and coal, also generates other nasty stuffs like sulfur dioxide or nitrogen monoxide; sulfur dioxide eventually becomes sulfur trioxide (oxidized by oxygen in air), this gas reacts with water and atmospheric oxygen to form sulfuric acid and thus acid rain. Air convert nitrogen monoxide to nitrogen dioxide, which is poisonous upon inhalation. Exposure to oxides of nitrogen may not always produce immediate effects but may result in fatal excessive fluid in the lung tissues (pulmonary oedema) some hours after the exposure stops. So, not a pleasant thing indeed.
we dont have to use animals to support our living style but do need an alternative and reliable energy source rather than fussel fuels.

ninad was correct (and a darned good answer may I add).
Plants cannot convert carbon monoxide. The convert carbon dioxide.
As to the rest of your question...
Plants are what produce the free oxygen. Animals eat the plants, and convert energy back into water and carbon dioxide and water.
You need both. Neither survives without the other.

Well, animals are fossil fuels waiting to happen. Automobiles are poison factories, not just emissions, but all the other man made crap used in their manufacture. You did not make your point very clear, but the Earth doesn't actually participate in the recycling of carbon monoxide, but supports the trees and plants that do.
