Are you talking about expressing your opinion freely, or just being mean for the sake of being mean.
I feel, if your opinion is requested you should feel free to express yourself. However, many people feel as if they have the right to express their opinion to others regardless of circumstances, even if their opinion is unwanted. It seems to me these type people are simply insecure and feel some need to express themselves in order to look smart or strong.
I think you meet people where they are. You must consider their understanding of life and maybe you need to guide them in the correct direction softly. There is no need to be cruel simply to be straight forward. You can stand up for your principals and beliefs without hurting others. Besides, it takes a stronger person to shut his mouth!

Yes, people in this world love to hear the nicest things.
If you tell someone that he/she has a big nose.
