Normally, the record books would require a minimum number of pinch-hit at bats in order for a player to be qualified for this record. I THINK the minimum is probably 50 pinch hit at bats, or something like that.... (maybe it's 100)

Tommy Davis (formerly of the Dodgers) was known for his pinch-hitting abilities...

Wikipedia states:

In 18 seasons Davis batted .294 with 153 home runs, 2121 hits, 1052 RBI and 811 runs in 1999 games played. He was named to the NL All-Star team in 1962 and 1963.

He was also one of the most proficient pinch-hitters in baseball history with a .320 batting average (63-for-197) – the highest in major league history upon his retirement, breaking the .312 mark of Frenchy Bordagaray.

Wikipedia refers to him as having the highest pinch hit batting average 'upon his retirement'. Davis retired in 1976. I'm not sure if his record has been surpassed by anyone since that time.

According to wikipeida, Manny Mota (also known throughout his career as a pinch-hitting specialist) had a career .294 pinch hit batting average...

mlb.com gives almost every 'situational' stat available on every player, but does not appear to break out 'pinch hitting' situations, unless I'm just missing it somewhere... if anyone knows where mlb.com lists pinch-hitting numbers, please let us know!

Here are a couple of sites that discuss pinch hitting records, but do not list the players with the highest pinch hit batting averages:

You need to be more specific. There are alot of ball players that have been up in a pinch hitting role just once in their entire career and got a hit that would make them all tied for the record of 1.000

I believe John Vander Wal holds the record for most pinch-hitting hits (not necessarily batting average)...
