I'm planting a small orchard on the back side of my property and I don't want to mow the grass around all my trees. I thought maybe someone new of a solution I could use ( even from a home remedy) would be good.

Regular kitchen vinegar will kills anything it comes in contact with; grass, weeds, etc. It is economical and natural. If an animal or person comes in contact with it, it will not do them any harm. I go to the local big box warehouse store and get it. I usually spend $3 on two gallon and a half jugs. You can either pour it on or put it in a sprayer and spray it on. Good luck!

Well, I would have recommended rock salt.. (about 10cents a pound), but, since you are going to do an "orchard", I would be very careful about adding anything because of the possibility that it may kill trees, if you get run off, from heavy rains.
The fastest way I have found, that will kill grass in a couple of hours... (yep, I did this and was mad, because I didnt know it was even going to kill my grass..sheesh!)...
Get yourself some rolled roofing!! Lay that on top of the grass, for an hour or so, (Make sure the Sun is out and hot), and that stuff will suck the nitrogren right out of the grass!!!
I was going to put it on my house and some one told me to lay it out in the yard first, well, I dont think I had it there for an hour and when I took it up...the entire area of grass was YELLOW!! It had sucked ALL nitrogen out of the blased grass and it took a while to come back!
Plus, you can take it up and keep laying it down and kill large areas at a time...
Mistakes are what make life interesting... some are oops...and some are aaaahhh! :)

cut the grass short, lay newspaper over it ( 5-10 pages thick) wet it down, and cover with mulch, it will kill the grass from lack of sunlight, unless you have crabgrass...that stuff is likely to poke through anything except for maybe vaporbarrier (that black plastic they line the ouside of foundations with to keep the moisture out)you can stake it down with tent stakes, you could try the weed felt too but newspaper is the cheapest...and you can plant right through it...

go to home depot and buy the 1gal of round-up and go to town. after 1 week go back and respray what did not die.
Round-up is very safe its a salt base so it only works on the leafs/blades of grass or weeds so after you kill it your can replant safely.

you could rent a sod cutter for not much money and cut it out, then sell it or donate it to someone that could use it ! selling it could turn a profit, if it is a large area! just a thought!
