Science came around before religion because science could solve practical problems of staying alive. Science is pragmatic because one asks a question "why?" "how?" and then forms a hypothesis (or guess) followed by experiment. For example, "How can I skin this antelope more efficiently?" Early human guesses perhaps a rock with a sharp edge may do the trick. He experiments with different rocks until he finds a satisfactory one. It then is improved upon. When science could not answer a question because of the inadequacy of knowledge or tools at the time, and humans developed the capacity for abstract thought, an event would be explained in supernatural terms and religion was invented. For example, the early humans discovered by scientific inquiry described earlier that striking flint to iron pyrite created a spark for fire. They did not have the means to understand the chemical and physical properties of the two kinds of matter and may have explained it in supernatural terms "The goddess of the fire lives in the rock." As knowledge was gained in science and it brought about new questions that could not be answered, both science and religion grew. A case in point: The very ancient Greeks did not understand why the seasons change. The means were not available to answer the question so it was answered by their religious beliefs and the story of Persephone was born. We still carry on the in the same way today.

Well a lot of religious beliefs came from true stories and actions we as a species have encountered. You can see even from http://earth.google.com we had some run ins with some meteors and if this is true then the raining for 40 days and 40 nights is true. Be fore the meteor hit we could live to be 200-300 years old easy. Now after this happened, our ozone was created. from then we as a species can not live much more past the age of 100. so the whole story about Noah and the ark might have been true but it was changed just so it can reflect a religious belief. remember around this time people could not write very well and some couldn't at all, so a lot of stories was change just because people always change the story to what they thought they heard and what they wanted to hear.

Most early scientists were men of religion simply because the clergy of the earlier times were the only educated people. Also the churches, mostly Roman Catholic, had the money to allow these scientists to explore. But for the most part I think if you look back over history science was usually at odds with whatever the current religious doctrine was at the time.

How would you define a religious belief as opposed to a scientific one ?
The only thing i can think of is that science is based on evidence, if something is not backed by proof/evidence it is rejected. A religious belief is something that is based on 'faith'; the believe in something despite evidence or maybe even in the face of evidence to the contrary.
The two are fundamentally different.

scientific thinking has been around for a long time. It truly developed during a period in the 1700's referred to as the enlightenment where scientific theory and methods began to truly develop. I think science filled the niche of answering questions religion could not answer (probably why there is such a conflict between the two) but those who truly understand both sides know that both can go hand in hand

Well, let's put it this way, when it comes to Biology, it might have been far better off and much more accurate to have done so ... especially in this day and age!! ... wherein many "biologists" hinge their interest and expertise around such drippy themes and suspect "evidence" as offered by self-seeking evolutionists!!
How many billions around the world are taxpayers squandering through governmental wastage of their monies on this anti-productive Tripe we call, "Evolution of the Species"??!!

Before there was science there was magic. Early scientists were magicians, astrologers, alchemists, and herbalists, they made remarkable discoveries some of which were banned by the Church as heresy. Folk religion and medicines are still relied upon in many Latin countries. Aztec physicians, pre-conquest, prescribed both herbal cures and prayers to certain gods as relief from ailments from pain of childbirth to sexually transmtted diseases.
