Well that is the general notion that we get from the media. Most people think that everyone in Africa as a whole is very dark and starving. Through my church I have met people from south africa, and some of them were white. I won't lie I was taken back at first and was confused. What most people forget about is that they were colonized by the dutch and their universal tongue down there originated from the dutch language.
It is simply a media misconception.

Because they haven't been there.
There was once a (white) rabbi who was the host of a radio talk (chat) show in Seattle, USA. He was from the RSA; still had the Afrikaner accent; his family fled in the '60s because they helped black people. His argument was that he was more of an African-American, despite being white, than most black people here in the US because he was actually born and raised in Africa.
I spent a month in Durban in 2001; saw a lot of up-country KwaZulu-Natal, such as Ladysmith, Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift. Fine place with some great people (both black and white) despite the crime rate. If only they'd vote for the IFP (I like Dr. Buthelezi) and throw out the ANC-SACP-COSATU coalition for a while, they could do even better...It wouldn't be good if the RSA went the way of Zimbabwe, would it?
