older unit, unknown year or serial #. batt is brand new, wont hold a charge. cut the grass twice and now not enough juice to crank motor. is this a problem with the coil? please advise. Thanks in advance,

Most newer mowers do have a dual stator system, one is for charging the battery, the other ffor the lights...... They don't start the engine.....

What you need to do is while its running, check the power output if each lead.

It's most likely a problem with the starter/alternator. Most units built in the last 20 years have a combination stater/alternator that both spins the motor to get you started and then switches over to a charger which replenishes the juice you took out of the battery to start it and also provides enough to run the motor while you're mowing. You should check all your connections, of course, to make sure they're not corroded or loose, and given that, if you can get the starter off, you may be able to find a part number stamped somewhere on it that could be used to find a replacement. I have a 15.5 hp craftsman riding lawn mower and the drive pulleys coming off the bottom of the motor does not turn anymore therefore my deck will not engage nor will the transmission, what do I need to do to fix this problem, thanks.
