Leaving out jet aircraft affects the accuracy of the answers. The ME 262 jet fighter was the only operational jet Fighter of WW II . It had unmatched speed and performance. However the plane that had the most success in shooting down the ME 262 in dog fights was the P51D Mustang. The Mustang was the only Allied fighter capable of escourting the bomber forces deep into Germany. Its speed, range and manueverability made it the best fighter of WW II. By the way the B-52 and B29 were bombers not fighters.

There were several excellent fighter planes during the war. It is difficult to choose a single one that was better than the others. The fighters played various roles during the war from interception of enemy planes to tactical bombing. If I had to choose overall, I would pick the British Spitfire, the German ME-109, and the U. S. P-51 Mustang. The Zero was the best fighter the Japanese had, and at the beginning of the war it was devastating to enemy planes. But it later proved to be easily damaged and was unable to handle fighters such as the U. S. Navy F4F later in the Pacific Theater. The Russian Yak also came into its own later on the Eastern Front and was able to eventually hold its own against the best German fighters.

The Spitfire was the best allied dog fighter of WW2 but was severely limited by range due to fuel capacity. It killed the German planes in the Battle of Britain. The Zero was the best Axis dog fighter. Ther German Me109 was a force to be reckoned with but the Mustang beat it. The Mustang was developed to escort Allied bombers into Germany and defend them It succeeded in that mission. Russia had good fighters that killed many German fighters. If I were American in WW2 as a fighter pilot that wanted to survive, I d choose the P-47 Thunderbolt. It had the best armor, firepower and engine survivability of any fighter of the war on either side. It brought more of its pilots home alive than any other. My vote goes to the P-47 Thunderbolt overall. I like to live.

The North American P-51 Mustang was a long-range single-seat fighter aircraft that entered service with Allied air forces in the middle years of World War II and became one of the conflict's most successful and recognizable aircraft.
The P-51 flew most of its missions as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, and helped ensure Allied air superiority after 1944. It also saw service against Japanese air forces in the Pacific War.
The Mustang began the Korean War as the United Nations' main fighter, but was supplanted by jets by the conflict's end. Nevertheless, it remained in service with some air forces until the early 1980s.
The definitive version of the single-seat fighter was powered by a single two-stage supercharged V-12 Merlin engine and armed with six .50 caliber (12.7 mm) M2 machine guns.
Some privately owned P-51s are still flying, often associated with organizations such as the Commemorative Air Force (formerly the Confederate Air Force); a few have had a tight second seat added in the space formerly occupied by the military radio and fuselage fuel tank.

The P-51 Mustang.
The Spitfire was a great aircraft, but it didn't have the range to fly into Germany, and it couldn't go head to head with the German Me-262 jet fighter. The P-51 could, responsible for shooting down over 40 Me-262s.
Not only that, but once P-51s were introduced, they could escort American daylight bombing raids, and eventually helped to gain air superiority over Germany.
