St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. The legends state him as bringing Christianity to Ireland. For that reason, it is the Irish national holiday, much like Independence Day is celebrated in the US. Because so many Irish emigrated to the US in the 19th century, St. Patrick's Day is celebrated in the US as well. But because it is not as "natural" for Americans to be Irish as it is for the Irish, Americans celebrate it much bigger.
