I don't think men pay less attention but I've always likened it to the expression "It's like taking your car to a mechanic who doesn't own one." Yeah they can go through just as much training, but it's just not the same. I know this can be taken as sexist, but personally I've only ever had luck with female GYNs. That's just me.

In the last few years, there's been a female nurse present for 'female checkups', not just the doctor. I think the doctors probably realize the female patients are a little uncomfortable. Mine, even though I've had a couple of kids (and modesty goes right out the window), makes some small talk and tries to keep my mind off what he is doing. I've never encountered an unprofessional gyn. You could always mention that you feel uncomfortable and you might even be able to bring your mom or a sister or friend in with you the first time, just for moral support. (not certain about this, but it doens't hurt to ask). G

I have had male & female gyns, OBs, and midwives, and I can honestly say I prefer male practitioners. The males were more sympathetic and had a better bedside manner. The females I had seen had more of a 'get over it' type attitude when something was wrong. Overall though, your relationship with your gyn & office staff is more important than the gender.

No not at all. Being a female patient the male doctors take extra care and precautions.

I liked my male gynecologists better for the most part, but I really appreciate that the female doctors NEVER say "You're going to feel a little pressure now."

The only thing that would make a female gyny better is that she has all the parts and can sympathize with the patient more. Perhaps you were having symptoms she recognized because she had them before.
