Governments debase coinage all the time by reducing the amount of precious (or just merely valuable) metal in them, but this takes place over decades. Unless they are minting just a few of them, you would be better putting cash in the bank.

Alternatively invest in gold as a commodity - it has being doing well of late, thanks to global economic environment

No. Nobody even wants the new dollar coins that came out in 2000. Coins are not popular. People prefer paper money.

The only folks who would want the $50 coin are collectors.
