I went on a cruise with my in-laws when I was 22 or 23. I loved the islands, but the excursions are expensive, so if you can't afford them, you will just be on the beach. I got a little bored on the cruise ship towards the end, but I think it was because the cruise was geared toward an "older" crowd. It's very important when you choose your cruise that you research the ship. Some are more for families, some are geared toward older people who want to gamble and watch Vegas-type shows, and some are more for younger people with dance clubs and gyms and such. You will most likely spend more time on the ship then on the shore, unless you are just going off-shore to the Bahamas. Then the distance is less and you obviously don't have to go as far. If you like the ocean, you will love the whole experience if you plan it right. :)

For me the ship. I went on a Caribbean cruise and frankly it all seemed a bit contrived. The 'random' local people all selling the same tee shirts at the same prices. The same kind of shops right by each port. It really seemed as if the cruise lines owned the islands and set them up as a theme park. Sure you could probably explore the island if you tried hard and get away from the tourist areas, but I have no desire to explore some third world island.

I'm sure it varies tremendously depending on the specific cruise and destination. I enjoyed the ship alot. You just have to ignore the exploitation of the staff who work for less than minimum wage without a decent break for about nine months straight, separated from their home their families and their friends. As long as you can ignore the rampant exploitation of the worlds poor by evil corporations, you'll have a great time!

For me i chose the island destination..You can see land and you can explore the island..It's more fun cuz you wont feel bored to yourself and it's more out of you. If at the cruise alone it's like that you are still at a hotel or a city in an island it's like away from everything..You can explore tropical foods and the scenery...But i will tell you it depends on you whether what do u prepare the most..What kind of person are you and what type of place and community do u wanted too.

I took a cruise last fall to Nova Scotia. I would much rather stay on the ship. That is what I will do next time. The shore trips are expensive and they are rush, rush rush. Just relax and take in the beautiful ocean! And the wonderful fooooood!

Personally, I always enjoy the at sea days. I enjoy just being on the water, not being able to see anything as far as the eye can see. Just relax and enjoy yourself, have some food, go to the show, etc.

Now, that isn't to say I don't enjoy getting of the ship to get a little shopping done ;-)
