First pitfall to avoid - if you're in the mindset of *wanting* their respect, it's important not to come off as needy. Relax, lean back, and be cool. Conduct yourself well and let respect come to you.
Then treat them with respect, but also treat yourself with respect.
There may be occasions where you have to balance the two - for example if you're considering going out of your way to show them respect, putting yourself out too much will show a lack of respect for yourself.
If the person is treating you badly, showing them much respect at all will be showing a lack of respect for yourself. If this is the case, aim for indifference towards them until they treat you a bit better.

You cannot gain/win anyone's respect unless you earn it! Prove you are worth their respect and before embarking on such a plan ... Have self-respect as unless you do ... You will not earn anyone's respect.
In brief, be honest about yourself, treat others as well as you like to be treated and do not let them down and that Girlie ... Applies to you as well!
Best wishes

Look at the way you dress, behave and the language you use. Look at the people who are generally respected. Celebrities are often paid lots of money - but few have respect. Mother Teresa helped people - she had love and respect.

Commitment to your goal. You commit yourself to your goal. Relationships don't use magic or faery dust, they work by mutual commitment.
IT's like carrying a heavy television set. You can't do it alone. Two people need to carry the television. If one wavers, the other compensates and vice versa. Though the important thing to remember is that you both need to be committed to carrying the television.
