Check with the caretakers of the cemetery first to make sure you are allowed to plant something near the grave. Some places have rules against that because it affects the time for mowing, and they also have to care for any plantings.

If planting is allowed, they probably have a list of approved plants.

Look for a plant that has a shallow root system that is not going to interfere with the grave to much I have seen how tree roots can make a mess of graves and the tombstones, think what you wanted the tree for in the first place is it just for decoration? Or is it going to serve another purpose, You migh be better off with a shrub or talk to someone at a nursery for your options, you also have to consider how often you are going to be able to get up there to water it and the season changes for it, and the soil condition as well.

I hope you find a nice one good luck

Just think of something that the person would have liked. Or for the time of year, like right now is Summer, so get something bright and fun. Here's what I do for my granpa's grave, I just go buy those cheap bunches of flowers (he is in the VA Cemetery so they pick up the flowers every 2 weeks) and stick them in the ground until next time.

Hostas are a good choice. They are hardy and the roots don't go too deep into the ground.
