Whitesnake (and all the other hair metal bands) couldn't have existed without Deep Purple; whose history and musicianship were part of the origins of the harder rock sounds that created "metal"

David Coverdale was in Deep Purple for so short a time in the nearly four decades the band has existed that most people don't remember.

Deep Purple has the better songs (more classics) and the better guitarist (in Richie Blackmore) but Whitesnake has the better singer in David Coverdale. Actually didn't David Coverdale used to be in the Burn era of Deep Purple? So I guess Deep Purple did have a great singer on their Burn and the following album.

They are basically the same band. The lead singer of Deep Purple when they first broke up was David Coverdale who was basically Whitesnake. He kept firing the musicians in Whitesnake and replacing them.

Deep Purple definitely. The singer for Whitesnake, David Coverdale, once sang for Deep Purple.JMO-Ian Gilliam was a better singer, Ian was also with Black Sabbath for a little while.
