The baby could have a low birth weight. Also as a child it could have asthma, bronchitis, and a higher susceptibility to other bronchial diseases. Also ear infections are more common in children whos mother smoked and continue to smoke after birth. The baby will usually need tubes in their ears to help with the infections.

Smoking during pregnancy restricts blood vessels leading to less oxygen available to the baby. Smoking can cause low birth weight babies and can lead to premature births. Low birth weight babies and premature babies have an increase risk for health-related problems at birth.

It´s quite easy: nicotine has the same effects on the baby than in adults. And it´s more dangerous since the baby is forming. It could affect his or her growing.
