Terminology is racist if the person to whom you are referring thinks it is. Just like you get to choose your own name.

I think most ethnic Asians would object to the term "Pakie" because (1) not all are ethnic Pakistanis and (2) it has historically been used to marginalise and abuse. Hence it's best not to use it. That doesn't mean you are racist but if you want to demonstrate your open-mindedness it's better to do it by avoiding needlessly treading on toes.

Not if noone is offended by it- although some people do find the word pakie offensive. In fact, in Only Fools and Horses "The Russians are Coming", when they are thinking about surviving a nuclear war and what they will do for food if everyone is dead they say, "There's bound to be a little pakie shop open somewhere", which I suppose can't be that offensive if it was broadcasted on national TV for family viewing.

I've always believed racism comes from the intention to offend - black people have phrases that are ok to use for each other that white people couldn't use, and are acceptable.

Calling the corner shop a 'Paki shop' is a phrase from a part of our past and I can see that you're not intending to offend, so in this case I'd say it's alright. But I would say that it's a lazy phrase, and calling the shop a corner shop is just as easy.

Just because you don't intend to offend, however, is not good enough these days. If someone hears you and takes offence, you have a certain amount of responsibility to this. Put yourself in the shoes of the shop owners, and ask if you'd like it. You probably wouldn't, especially if you weren't from Pakistan.

This term would be classed as racist. what you must be careful of is third party. You could be talking to a member of the family, someone overhear you could get in trouble with the police if that person was offended. Most racist complaints come from the third party I have a friend who is married to a black girl has mixed race children, and he was accused by saying something like this, he was suspended form his job because nobody bothered to ask him, but I'm glad to say he was cleared.

It's funny because years ago that term was widely used (and Del Boy used it a lot in a few episodes) and when I'm watching Only Fools & Horses now and Del says he's 'off to the Pakie shop' I do sort of wince and think: "Oh, you can't say that now"!

So it's not acceptable to say that because not all Asians originate from Pakistan so it's a generalisation.

Any description that describes a person's race is racist.
'A Paki' is someone from Pakistan, and is just the shortened version of the countries name. However due respect must always be shown to another's country.
If you describe a shop by the race of the person who owns it, you're racist as hell. If you are just copying others in the common speech, you are including yourself in their racist club.
Best to avoid any descriptions of things that relate to a personal description of someone.

I'm a caucasian that has spent his life in different parts of the world, and have seen racism at it's worse from both sides.

Our local "Paki" shop is actually run by Bangladeshis. Is yours??
My parents aren't racist, and my Dad always has a good chat to the guy who owns it.

My brother however calls every Asian by that name. But he's just stupid and ignorant!

The shops are brilliant, because they sell a bit of everything and before shops opened all hours you could almost guarantee they would still be open!

You could experiment here!

Go into the shop and tell the shop keeper what you all call his shop...

You will soon get your answer!!!

I'm sorry I won't be there to help you... i'll be off flying round answers... helping non racists... just stay non racist, thats the best way to be... you obviously doubt it... as you have questioned it... i know a lot of asians... who would find it offensive...

of course it is, pakis own the shop so its a paki shop, people are so touchey on racism now, u cant do or say anything without being racist, so if we dont rebel against it were going to get worse, i think we should stand up for it, its not racist to point out facts, anyone agree
