You can't actually "buy" a star, but you can name one. There are plenty to go around ya know.

It's a cute gesture - especially if he knows where it's located and can point it out to her. And, as to who can name a star, one would have to ask what gives the International Astronomical Union more of a right to name celestial objects than anyone else. For the most part, they're a group of astronomers while the star registry group (and its customers) that named a star after your friend is just a different group. I guess the only real difference is one group is bigger than the other and recognized by more people. I think the IAU is probably recognized by more people right now, but I guess if enough people decide to recognize the group that named a star after them, then eventually the star registry group would be recognized by more people.

No you can not buy a star. No one on earth owns any of them and at this time it is impossible to go to a star. Anything can happen on the TV so don't believe mush of what you see. The nearest star to earth is the sun. Yes the sun is a star and a small star at that.

There are places that will claim to sell you the naming rights to a star. This is not exactly honest, as they have no more power to assign these names than you do, so all you are really getting is a fancy certificate.

You can buy it's label unless the local beings have already named it but rather than an HIP numberyou buy it for your name.
You can buy a star from NASA.
If aliens don't exist there then not just do you own the label, you own the star itself.
