Literature has many purposes, among them:
1. As Dr. Freud used to say, literature (like dreams) is the road into the human psyche. Therefore, it can teach us about human psychology and WHY we behave the way we behave.
2. It also teaches us about the world around us, and can bring very distant cultures right into our own homes.
3. Literature enriches our lives by allowing our imagination to grow and expand.
4. Last but not least, literature is entertaining and inspiring! Reading a good book is the smartest way to spend your time.

To concur with above answers, I read a nifty article about how the brain functions during the state of involved reading.
Basically, the centers activated are strikingly similar to the dream state and recalling memory. The researchers concluded that the images wrought from reading are generated in the memory sections of the brain, you're equating the fiction experience with your own experiences! In fact, their survey revealed many people that actually said they still retain vivid memories of novels more clearly than their own childhood. Literature has a powerful influence on your brain.

I believe your question should instead read:
"What are the purposes of literature?"
for there are certainly more than one: entertain, educate/inform, inspire, warn, force the reader to think/question, make money (Dr. Johnson once said, ""Anyone who writes for anything but money is a fool".) convert, convince, persuade, titillate, arouse, horrify, move to action - well, the list could go on and on, especially since the term "literature" is so inclusive.

Like anything, it should inspire, bring out an emotion in you that leaves you truly amazed, content, bewildered, whatever.
