Most Mfrs. of hard drives (i.e. Maxtor, Seagate, etc) have hard drive diagnostic programs available for their hard drives.
Download and run a diagnostic scan of your hard drive, their software will check for bad sectors.
I always use the Mfrs. diagnostic software for hard drive issues -
Maxtor uses Powermax - http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.3c67e325e0a6b1f6294198b091346068/?channelpath=%2Fen_us%2FSupport%2FSoftware+Downloads%2FView+By+Category%2FDesktop+Storage%2FDiamondMax+Family%2FDiagnostics&downloadID=22
Seagate uses Sea Tools - http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/index.html
Western Digital uses Data Lifeguard -

i had to check my hard drive yesterday for a file error so i went my computer >right click local disk >properties>tools and use the disk error check utility when prompted tick the box to fix any errors and apply, you will then be told it will check on the next restart,so just return to your desktop and re-boot
if you are using ntfs it will use a 3 stage check and if you are using fat 32 it will just use a single check and inform you of any errors and what action was taken
after a ntfs check the computer will restart and boot up as normal
i would strongly advise against downloading any 3rd party disk error programs as many mess up your registry and do more damage than good
the only one i would say is safe enough is a program called ccleaner avalible from http://www.ccleaner.com/ ,this is a highly recognized cleaner and i have heard rave reveiws about it
good luck

Just type "hard drive detect", "hard drive manager", etc something like that in the search box of search engines as Yahoo!, Google,... you'll find hundreds of what you want.

Start with running a ckdsk and a defrag. That will let you know if there is anything going on.
