tell my brother-in-law to leave me alone and get a job

Perhaps he/she appears fit and healthy, but appearances aren't everything. I had a mental disorder that basically made me useless for some time, yet I still had my cute clothes and I still looked pretty normal.

So, when I encounter a panhandler, I generally try to give him or her some money. If I'm in a situation where I feel it's not safe to pause or open my purse, I can at least give the person a smile.

Nobody likes to beg. It's degrading and embarrassing. Even just a friendly smile can go a long way.

I counter with a little bit of buddhism, the budhists believe that at some stage we have all been son, or daughter, father or mother to everyone else on the planet, so my reply to these people is, "As I must have told you a thousand times before, get a job!"

He may be all the things you say, but this does not mean that people will give him a job. He can therefore, still be as needy as the old man with dirty clothes begging on the next corner.

We should give with a cheerful heart. God sees that you are willing to give. What the person does with it is up to him. Also, once you have "given" the money, its gone, dont hang on to what isnt yours anymore. A few kind words of encouragement would help too...
